The Soulages museum: Rodez' pride
My colleague Marielle has offered to help me with the Club des Sites challenge, which you can follow here. In this article, she'll guide you through the most recent pride of Rodez: the Soulages museum. Soulages is a world-known artist, who was born in Rodez and made gift of part of his collection to his native city. Architects were eager to be part of the project and it eventually looks like this:

"Last Saturday I decided to explore the Soulages museum a second time. Standing in the Victor Hugo Avenue, I was yet again impressed by this big block of rusty coloured steel. Inside I find myself patiently waiting in line to get my ticket. I get to choose between a free audioguide or a smartphone application to guide me thoughout my visit."

A total of 1700 m² is dedicated entirely to the exhibition of the wide variety of Soulages' work. The architecture is especially designed to illuminate both his dark paintings and his lightpeering stained glass windows.
There's no particular direction to contemplate the variety of art pieces. You'll find yourself watching the permanent exhibition only to walk into a temporary one. Alongside images, texts and videos help you to understand the intention of the different creations. However, the audioguide is useful to complete this kind of information.
The museum also houses an auditorium which welcomes up to 80 persons for conferences and workshops.
Soulages asked for the 500 m² of temporary exhibition to be dedicated to the work of other contemporary artists. Ideally, he also wants to offer a temporary home to them by welcoming them in the house he was born in. However, this is just a project at the moment.

How it all started
In 2005 Pierre Soulages and his wife Colette donate 500 pieces of his work. This gift allows the construction of a museum in the artist's honour. The Soulages museum will open some nine years later in May 2014 and will turn out to be a contemporary masterpiece by the Catalans RCR architects and integrates amazingly well into the city's landscape.

Time to take a bite
The museum has a direct access to the Bras Café where I enjoyed a hot chocolate and a cake.
Prices
The entry ticket at €9 might seem pricy, but it is valid one month and includes access to the two other museums: Fenaille and Denys Puech. Each first Sunday of the month the entrance is free to any visitor.
